How to become a member of the ISTD

Student Membership

You do not have to be in full-time education to take advantage of this category. If you hold Intermediate, Advanced 1 or Advanced 2 in one of the Theatre Faculties, or the ‘Student Member’ qualification in one of the Dance Sport Faculties, but you have not yet gained your Associate status, then this is suitable for you. However, you should not be teaching or entering candidates for examinations in the Theatre Faculties unless you become Pre-Registered. If you wish to become a Student Member or you know someone who does, please email the Membership Department membership@istd.org for a student enrolment form.

Professional Membership

If you have passed your first Associate examination in any of the ISTD Dance Sport & Theatre Faculties (and you are not already a student member), you will automatically be sent an enrolment form to complete and return with the appropriate payment.

Once enrolled as a member, you will be sent an enrolment pack, which includes a variety of information about the ISTD. You will also be allocated a membership number and sent a membership card. On production of the current membership card, you are entitled to attend ISTD courses and congresses on payment of the appropriate entry fee. Click here for more information about courses.

As a member you will receive Dance magazine four times a year. Click here for more information about Dance.

In order to maintain your membership and continue to receive Dance magazine with all up-to-date Faculty information, it is essential that you pay the appropriate membership subscription fee annually.

All subscriptions run from 1 January to 31 December each year.

Subscription categories of professional membership:

  1. Non-Active: This is available to all members holding Associate status or above who are not actively teaching. To pay the reduced rate, you must sign the declaration on the subscription reminder form to state that you will not be teaching throughout the year and that you will not advertise your ISTD qualifications. Note: if you are not employed when you pay your subscription, but you will be looking for employment during the year, you must pay the full teaching subscription.

  2. Full Teaching: All members holding Associate status or above who are actively teaching must pay the full subscription.

  3. Joint Subscription: The joint subscription is made up of one and a half times the full subscription. If you and your partner, or spouse wish to receive only one copy of Dance between you, then you may pay this category of subscription.

  4. Life Membership: If you are a member of the ISTD and have held a Licentiate or Fellowship qualification for 35 years or more whilst consistently paying your membership subscriptions during this time, you may apply to the Membership Department for Life Membership. There is no membership fee for this category, but you do have to pay the annual subscription for Dance if you wish to continue receiving it.

Registration

Registration applies only to the Theatre Faculties. If you wish to enter candidates for ISTD examinations, you are required, as a member, to have some form of registration.

Registration was first introduced into the Theatre Faculties in 1986. Prior to this date any teacher could enter candidates for ISTD examinations regardless of their qualifications, and even if their work was not of the correct standard. This scheme was brought in to ensure that teachers would complete ISTD teaching qualifications, and therefore maintain a high standard of examination entry. There are presently three forms of registration.

Pre-Registration

Student members can apply for Pre-Registration if you wish to enter candidates for examinations. Pre-Registration is a two-year period at
the end of which you must have gained Associate status (only available until 31/08/2004. Please be aware that after the 31st August 2004 the Associate and Associate Diploma qualifications will no longer be offered by the ISTD. Instead they are being replaced by the Certificate in Dance Education and Foundation in Dance Instruction. Accredited Prior Learning application forms will be sent out to each new member as part of their welcome pack, and we are advising each member to complete this and return to our Education and Training Department to receive advice regarding the new qualifications).

You must also be entering candidates for examinations within the first twelve months and regularly thereafter.

Pre-Registration is also available to non-members who do not hold any ISTD VGED qualifications through application to the Membership Department. As a successful applicant, you will be required to take the appropriate VGED exams plus the Associate examination (only available until 31/08/2004. Please be aware that after the 31st August 2004 the Associate and Associate Diploma qualifications will no longer be offered by the ISTD. Instead they are being replaced by the Certificate in Dance Education and Foundation in Dance Instruction. Accredited Prior Learning application forms will be sent out to each new member as part of their welcome pack, and we are advising each member to complete this and return to our Education and Training Department to receive advice regarding the new qualifications) at the end of the two-year period. Once again, you are expected to enter candidates for examinations within the first twelve months and regularly thereafter.

Provisional Registration

After successful completion of your Associate, you can then begin work on your Associate Diploma examination (Theatre Faculties only) if you are actively teaching and entering candidates for examinations. This is a three-year period at the end of which you must meet the requirements for the Associate Diploma (only available until 31/08/2004.

A portfolio entitled ‘Record of Studies’ must be completed by UK candidates, as well as two practical examinations. If you become Provisionally Registered, you will pay the Full Teaching subscription. Further information regarding this qualification can be gained from ISTD HQ.

Full Registration

Upon successful completion of the Associate Diploma, Full Registration is awarded. The teacher's examination entries will continue to be monitored as outlined below.

Monitoring

There are circumstances in which a teacher may lose their registration. If their examination results have a high percentage of failures, 25% or more, the examiner may bring this to the attention of the Faculty Chairman.

The Chairman will ask that a committee member be sent to cover the teacher's next examination session to check the situation, and the teacher may be encouraged to attend courses if she or he is not up to date with the syllabus.

If the results continue to be poor despite advice and assistance given to the teacher, the committee may consider taking away the teacher's registration.

Council for Dance Education & Training (CDET)

The CDET maintains a database of teachers who are fully registered with the ISTD, as well as other examining bodies in the dance world, who have fulfilled the criteria to become CDET members.

The CDET actively campaigns on behalf of all teachers of dance to raise the profile of dance education, to ensure a consistent standard across the examining bodies and to gain government recognition.

It is for this reason that our registration requirements must comply with those agreed amongst the member bodies on the CDET.
