A
Special Workshop for Boys
The
Cecchetti Centre held another Boys’ Workshop at
Dance Attic for young dancers from 8 to 12 years and
it was great!
For
the first time, Paul Lewis directed and was accompanied
by the brilliant Andrew West on the piano. Andrew is
senior pianist at the Royal Ballet School, White Lodge
where he’s worked for 35 years and Paul Lewis
who was soloist with English National Ballet, teaches
the 2nd year boys at the Central School of Ballet. He
teaches extensively throughout London as a guest teacher
at the top dance schools and gives regular open classes
at Danceworks.

Boys at Workshop
Paul
gave a challenging class, which the boys relished. His
explanations and corrections were clear, simple and
funny and his witty delivery kept the boys going for
an hour and a half. After a short break, he brought
them back together for a repertoire session –
Act 2 Coppelia: The Mugging Scene!
One
of the taller boys, James Carroll who played Dr Coppelius
was swamped in an overcoat and ‘Dr Who’
scarf. The other boys in two groups took pleasure in
humiliating, pushing and tying him up. They loved it!
Only at the end does Dr Coppelius get revenge on the
smallest mugger by mild strangulation. (Note to self:
‘Risk Clause’ for future events…)
Thank
you to the boys for their enthusiastic performance and
to their teachers for supporting this event.
