Fewster
Cecchetti Scholarship
A
dance treat
For
a dance treat in London, I attended the annual Fewster
Cecchetti Scholarship held at The Place on Sunday 9th
November. 14 girls and eight boys, from six vocational
schools (Arts Ed, Tring, Central, Hammond, Kate Simmons
Dance Ltd, ENB and The Royal Ballet School) provided
the entertainment, with Stuart Marsden aiding and abetting
them with verve and wit.

The
adjudicator was Jacqueline Davenport from Bremen with
Elisabeth Swan by her side and the class was taught
by Sandra Madgwick, formerly of Birmingham Royal Ballet,
whose positive and helpful manner kept the event buoyant
and lively. A welcome touch was that all the students
returned after the break, which led to increasingly
confident performances. The worthy winner was Paul Russell
(RBS) with Chelsea Andrejic (ENB) and Haruka Tabei (Kate
Simmons Dance Ltd) as runners-up. The boys’ award
went to Samuel Chung (Arts Ed).
In
her adjudication Jacquie Davenport gave advice to all
the dancers to take home, which was: “to make
sure to finish the work, to use the demi plié
and to be aware of hands.”
In his thanks, Richard Glasstone mentioned how delighted
Barbara Fewster would have been to have two former students
of The Royal Ballet School as the adjudicator and teacher;
commending the judgement of the former and the fine
demonstration of the latter.
