Fewster
Cecchetti Scholarship
The Fewster Cecchetti Scholarship was held this year at The
Place on November 2nd. This scholarship was inaugurated to
help students at professional schools to pursue their Cecchetti
training.
There
was a good turn-out; Arts Educational (Tring), Central, English
National Ballet, Kate Simmons and Legat Schools were all represented.
The adjudicator was Patricia Linton, assisted by Juliet Locks,
and the splendid accompanist was Guy Attew. The classes, given
by Susan Lucas, ex BRB (and herself a Cyril Beaumont Cecchetti
Scholar at the Royal Ballet School) were most helpful, with
relatively simple confidence building exercises, some tricky
timing and beautiful lines, and some challenging arrangements.

Miss
Linton gave a most interesting history of Miss Fewster, and
her influence on her own career; and she also gave advice
on musicality, use of épaulement, and the care needed
to keep the classical shape and line. The awards were made
on potential and on Cecchetti style - and the winners were
Belinda Oddy of the English National Ballet School, originally
a pupil of Elisabeth Swan - and Boris Riesenberg of Central
School, originally a pupil of Jacqueline Davenport, in Germany.
The runners up - were Sophie Diamond and Joshua Thew, both
from Arts Educational School (Tring).
