Area Competition
March 28th and April 4th 2004
A
week after the London Mabel Ryan Awards it was the turn of
the Southern Area Awards. Lots of eager children and their
parents gathered at the Shoreham Community Centre.
Miss
Alison Jenner and Miss Gillian Toogood were the adjudicators
for the day which began with the Juniors. This section is
adjudicated totally in the morning and for the second year
running was won by a boy!

There
had been a record number of 60 entries for the Lower Middle
section. Miss Molly Caulder, who was founder of this competition,
would have been thrilled at such support. It was however a
huge task for not only the two adjudicators, but for Miss
Mary Stassinopoulos who was there to give the Vacani Award
in this section, and the Caulder Award in the Upper Middle
and Seniors, for the ‘Joy of Dance’.
A
week later the finals took place. Mrs Victoria Chappell, who
was the adjudicator, first commented on how beautifully groomed
all the children were, and also how the joy of dance and sense
of purpose shone through. Her comment "ballet is simplicity
and elegance" hopefully has been taken on board by all
the candidates. The Upper Middle and Senior sections were
also encouraged to strengthen their footwork and centres to
enable them to prepare for pointe work in the future. Mrs
Chappell managed to speak to every candidate giving them helpful
tips and words of encouragement.
The
competition ran very smoothly thanks to all those back stage
and of course to Liz Hewson who accompanied them and as always
played tirelessly and sympathetically throughout. As Mrs Chappell
said - it was a delightful afternoon!
