The
Mabel Ryan Awards and Barbara Geoghegan Award with Vacani
Awards
A
round up of these popular awards
The
prestigious Mabel Ryan Awards were held at the Robin
Howard Theate, The Place, on Sunday 3rd February 2008.
It was pleasing that all sections were well attended
and the competitors appeared calm, confident and beautifully
groomed.

up
Susan
Lucas, Cecchetti trained by Gillian Dawson before going
on to The Royal Ballet School, congratulated the participants
on improved footwork and reminded the Juniors about
the importance of flowing port de bras. The middle performers
were encouraged to use their imaginations to transport
them to somewhere magical thus persuading them to use
their eyes to extend their line.
We
were treated to a very exciting class by Errol Pickford
and accompanied by Derek Downes. Students from Arts
Educational, Tring, Central School of Ballet, Elmhurst
School for Dance, Kate Simmons Dance Ltd and the Rambert
School inspired us all with their energy and enthusiasm.

Lauren-Claire Smith
David
Drew adjudicated the Senior and Barbara Geoghegan Awards
and remarked on how the Cecchetti Method produces an
excellent technique in dancers with emphasis on the
upper body, with use of epaulement and port de bras
and balance in all things with nothing to excess. He
encouraged the students to practise the exercises they
find the most difficult rather than just their favourite
steps!
Thank you to Judith Wilson and her team for yet
another beautifully organised Cecchetti event.
Lower
Junior Awards Sunday, 9th March 2008 Oxford House, Bethnal
Green
The
Lower Junior Awards were held in a new venue, which
was Oxford House, Bethnal Green. The children were divided
into two groups, A and B, according to age and with
the expert guidance of Sarah Wells and beautiful accompaniment
by Liz Hewson, the children performed their exercises
and then the very popular Witch Dance (girls) and Jolly
Jack Tar (boys).
Gillian
Dawson adjudicated the new Associate Performance Awards
and complimented the competitors on their excellent
grooming. Sandra Madgwick, herself Cecchetti trained,
remarked on how the wonderful Cecchetti principles prepare
a dancer for all aspects of dance in the theatre. Both
adjudicators gave clear reasons why they picked out
the winners, runners up and commendations and gave everybody
the encouragement and inspiration to return next year.
any
congratulations to Judith Wilson, Liz James, Caroline
Wright and their team for producing another very impressive,
well-run competition. The Cecchett Society would like
to give many thanks and much appreciation to their sponsors:
Freed of London, Darcia International, International
Dance Supplies and Okeron Books.
