Cecchetti Lower Junior Mabel Ryan Awards Saturday 14th February 2009
This was an enjoyable afternoon of young promising talent. Sandra Powell adjudicated the Cecchetti Associate Performance Awards, for quality and natural joy that comes from within a child. Fiona Chadwick adjudicated the Lower Junior Awards and gave some very helpful constructive comments with much encouragement for these young dancers.
This year the annual Mabel Ryan and Barbara Geoghegan Awards were held in a new venue, the
tratford Circus Theatre, on 14th and 15th February.
The Cecchetti Group members, the organisers of these events, were on hand to welcome and take care of each and every one of the, competitors and guests.
The Junior and Middle Awards took place during the morning when more than 60 young dancers presented their class work and solos. The adjudicator for these Awards was Fiona Chadwick, ex-Principal of the Royal Ballet Company. She was accompanied by Mary Stassinopoulos, a senior Cecchetti Examiner who was responsible for adjudicating the Vacani Award for Joy of Dance.

Both adjudicators encouraged the competitors by saying that – as well as concentrating on technique and strong footwork – they could also aim for more relaxed use of head and upper body.
The Senior Award and Barbara Geoghegan Award took place in the afternoon and were adjudicated by Anita Young, former soloist at Covent Garden. Mary Stassinopoulos also adjudicated the Vacani Award for the Senior Section. The adjudicators in the afternoon also emphasised the need to continue movements – through the body, the arms and right through to the finger tips.

For the Barbara Geoghegan Award we moved up to vocational students already on their way to professional careers and 19 girls and 8 boys were entered from the following schools: Central, Hammond, Kate Simmons, Lynsey Kidd, Rambert and Tring. Errol Pickford, ex Principal of the Royal Ballet Company took an exhilarating class and the students rose to the challenge in both the class work and classical variation.

Miss Young’s generous adjudication showed that she had clearly enjoyed the students’ work, both in the class and in their variations. She particularly praised their attack and their professional approach and sense of performance.
The pianists throughout the day were Liz Hewson (Mabel Ryan Awards) and Derek Downes for the Barbara Geoghegan Award.
The Smooth running of the day was a great credit to the Cecchetti Group under the leadership of Judith Wilson.
Sponsorship was provided by Freed and gifts were donated by Dancia International, IDS and Oberon Books.
