| The
Mabel Ryan Awards and
Barbara Geoghegan Award
The
Awards were held on Sunday March 6th at The Place in London
- a very busy day with four levels of Mabel Ryans before the
well supported Barbara Geoghegan Award. The events were organised
and very well run by the Cecchetti Group, under their new
Chairman Judith Wilson.
The
Lower Junior and Junior Awards were adjudicated by Jonathan
Payn, himself a three time winner of Mabel Ryans, now dancing
with the Birmingham Royal Ballet. The Middle
and Senior Awards were adjudicated by Sandra Madgwick, ex-principal
of the Birmingham Royal Ballet; and the Barbara Geoghegan
was adjudicated by Brenda Last, former principal of
the Royal Ballet, also Ballet Mistress and Repetiteur. All
the adjudicators were both encouraging and helpful, giving
many commendations as well as runners up. The level of entries,
both in number and in quality, was very pleasing.
The
Vacani awards, given for love of dance, were adjudicated by
Mary Stassinopoulos and Gillian Dawson.
Entries for the Barbara Geoghegan Award, which is for students
in full time training at professional schools, came from the
Arts Educational School, Tring, Central School of Ballet,
Kate Simmons Dance Ltd, Legat School, and Rambert School.
The class work was given by Richard Glasstone - a lovely mixture
of quite simple sequences with challenging timing sometimes
and ample opportunities to shine. The winner was Grace Hoy,
from Arts Educational, Tring, and the runners up were Sam
Walton, also from Tring, and Chiara Vinci, from the Rambert
school.
Music
for the day came from Liz Hewson for the Mabel Ryan Awards
- a mammoth and amazing undertaking, always sympathetic and
helpful through many repetitions of music which seemed fresh
each time. The less lengthy but equally demanding accompaniment
for the Barbara Geoghegan, with classical variations for all,
was provided, splendidly, by Derek Downes. Altogether a day
to remember
