Southern Area Awards
This
year the Southern Area Awards celebrated their 25th
anniversary aptly piped in by 49 excited under-nines
with their Piper's Dance.
As
usual the competition progessed very smoothly under
the direction of Mechele Lefkaridi and Penelope Walker,
with guidance from Sandra Powell.
Adjudicators for the Junior Section were Linda Young
and Narin Ibrahim. They gave the young competitors some
very encouraging comments and awarded several commendations
in addition to the winner and runners up. In the afternoon
they judged the preliminary heats of the Lower and Upper
Middle Sections and the Seniors. The standard was high
and many children were passed through to the finals.
Judith Wilson adjudicated the Vacani and Molly Caulder
Awards for Joy of Dance. Her very good advice to both
sections was that: "the joy of dance comes from
within, not from a fixed smile".
The finals found Mary Stassinopoulos adjudicating –
a change from her usual role of Joy of Dance adjudicator.
She was very pleased with the quality of work presented
and gave excellent advice to the dancers on how to improve
their performances. When judging the Barbara Geoghegan
Cup for musicality she stressed how important it was
to hear and interpret the highlights of the music.
Special mention must be made of the beautiful accompaniment
of Liz Hewson, which I'm sure brings out the best dance
quality in the children, and the very clear presentation
of the work on stage by Sandra Powell and Mechele Lefkaridi.
They put everyone at ease on both days. In addition
we must not forget the many helpers backstage, led by
Jane Worsley, who helped to make the days run so smoothly.
Molly Caulder and Sandra Powell founded this competition
in 1983. Sadly Molly is no longer with us but our thanks
go to Sandra for the many hours of hard work which has
made the competition so successful.
