Cecchetti Teachers Weekend
On the 3rd and 4th February 2007, 120 Cecchetti teachers from the UK and abroad made their way to the Kate Simmons Dance Ltd in Warrington for an inspirational weekend organised by Kate Simmons and Gillian Hurst with the support of Judith Wilson, Chairman of the Cecchetti Group. The welcoming atmosphere on our arrival confirmed the exciting weekend ahead.
We were delighted to welcome Sarah Combes from the ISTD who held a most enlightening question and answer session about the CDE qualification. A wonderful lecture with Kate followed focusing on different body types; stressing how teachers must hold their determination to encourage the very best each student is capable of. Clearly demonstrating with the help of her students that they can really give their best whilst still smiling and enjoying themselves.
Gillian arranged the highlight of the day, with a beautiful demonstration of the Cecchetti major work from Intermediate to Diploma performed by students of the Upper school. This was a wonderful opportunity to understand the development of the method and the importance of accurate teaching, especially to 'once a week' students.
Tumultuous applause from the teachers showed our appreciation. The evening was spent making new friendships, rekindling old ones and meeting new teachers from across the country before being put 'on the line' the following day when it was our turn to dance!
We were put through our paces, looking at adage, pirouettes and allegro with both Kate and Gillian reminding us that students will copy our faults! Exhausted but inspired, Sunday afternoon was spent learning from Gillian and Kate as they taught the Northern Cecchetti Associates.
I'm sure everyone who was present would join me in thanking Kate and Gillian for giving freely of their time and knowledge and allowing us all to enjoy a superb, informative weekend at Kate's School, Kate Simmons Dance Ltd, all of which was completely 'gratuit'.
