Choreographic
Competition
The
annual Cecchetti Choreographic Competition was held on Sunday
23rd November at Cecil Sharp House.
This
event has always been a popular one on the Society’s
calendar and this year there was a record number of 95 entries.
The young choreographers were divided into various sections
and age groups and provided the audience with an afternoon
of imaginative entertainment, with styles ranging from Classical
Ballet to Contemporary and Jazz.

The
choreographic adjudicator was Anita Young, a former soloist
of the Royal Ballet. Currently she is teaching at the Central
School of Ballet and the Senior Associates of the Royal Ballet
School. The dancers were fortunate to benefit from Anita Young’s
expertise and nobody envied her the task of having to choose
winners out of such a variety of dance techniques. The musical
adjudicator was Roland Thompson, who studied at the Royal
Academy of Music and is currently music director at a school
in Berkshire. He was most encouraging to the competitors in
his adjudication and awarded a number of musical commendations.
The overall standard of choreography was high, showing originality,
and it was noted that the young choreographers showed a very
creative use of their music.

With
such a large entry, it was a tribute to the very efficient
team responsible for the afternoon that the event ran so smoothly
throughout. Our thanks go to Juliet Locks, Susan Handy, Wendy
Mitchell and Linda Isaacs for the organisation, and to the
many members of the Cecchetti Group who contributed to the
smooth running of the day.
