Northern Area Awards

The Cecchetti Northern Area Awards were held on Sunday 7th November, at the Pomegranate Theatre in Chesterfield, the eighth year they have been held at this venue. It is always a pleasure to be there as the atmosphere is warm and friendly and the setting is delightful.

This year for the first time there was a Lower Junior Section in addition to the Junior, Middle and Senior Sections which enabled many younger competitors to take part and enjoy the opportunity of dancing on stage in a real theatre.

The adjudicator on this occasion was Juliet Locks, Vice Chairman of the Cecchetti Society, making a return visit after seven years. She was joined for the Junior Section by Mary Stassinopoulos, Director of the Vacani School, who adjudicated the Vacani Award for Joy of Dance. Juliet Locks' comments on each section were positive and very encouraging with many competitors receiving Special Mentions and Commendations. She complimented all the competitors on the standard of their work which showed a promising sense of performance and excellent footwork.

The teachers too were complimented on the care they had put into preparing the dancers for the competition. The young dancers were asked however to take care with the line of the arms and to try to achieve a more generous breadth of movement remembering that the arm lines extended to the ends of the fingers.

The success of the day was undoubtedly due to the hard work of the principal organisers of the event, Carolyn Parker and Mary-Jane Duckworth, assisted by Eve Leveaux and Susan Dingle, who were joined on the day by a strong backstage support team. The pianist throughout the day was the indefatigable Eileen Hughes whose contribution was warmly applauded. The pupils of 15 teachers took part, many of them travelling considerable distances. This year will see the 25th anniversary of the Awards which began in 1980.

Wales & West Area Awards

On Sunday 7th November 2004 the Wales and West Cecchetti Awards were held at the Congress Theatre, Cwmbran in Gwent. The awards received excellent support with just under 100 entries which were divided into three sections, Junior, Middle and Senior Awards.

Carol Goode presented the Junior work whilst Jacqui Everson and Annette Rogers presented the Middle and Senior sections. Particular thanks are due to Carol Goode and Pamela Miller for organising the day and thanks are also due to Penny Hughes who accompanied the set work with her usual high standard and enthusiasm.

Christine Axon provided expert adjudication and gave encouragement and helpful advice to candidates, especially in the area of audience awareness, to whom they are always dancing. It was a lovely day and many of the new entrants expressed a keen desire to take part again next year!
