Robinson FISTD
Vera
Robinson, founder and principal of the Vera Robinson School
of Dancing, died at her home on 12th December 2004 after a
long illness.
Vera
trained with Rita Emmerson in Petts Wood, opening her school
in Sevenoaks in 1952. As well as Ballet she held adult keep-fit
and Ballroom classes, later introducing Tap and Modern Jazz.
The school grew in size and I joined her in 1964 teaching
Ballet, and her daughter Diana, in 1974 taking Ballet, Tap
and Modern classes.
Vera was an Examiner for the Society for many years, as well
as one of the early members of the Cecchetti Group, taking
on secretarial duties. She retired from examining, and later
from her teaching in 1995 having seen over 2000 pupils progress
through the school, with a number going on to train at vocational
schools. Her work for the Society was recognised in her being
awarded a Long Service Award.
Dancing was her life, and to the end she loved to hear of
what was happening at the school and of developments within
the Society. I am so pleased that she was able to attend the
school's 50th Anniversary show in October 2002, a history
of Sevenoaks, presented in her honour. I know she gained much
pleasure from watching the video. She will be sadly missed.
