Cecchetti
Choreographic Competition
The annual Choreographic Competition is always a delight. Held this
year on 17th November at Cecil Sharp House in London, it drew as usual
a very large number of entries.

Rebecca
Cook, winner of the Laura Payne Cup with the adjudicators
|
With
such a large entry it was a tribute to the very efficient and well organised
team responsible for the afternoon that the event ran so calmly and
smoothly throughout. Our thanks go to Linda Isaacs, Wendy Mitchell,
Susan Handy and members of the Cecchetti Group, under the overall direction
of Juliet Locks.
From
the smallest and youngest to the most mature senior entry the competitors
took to the floor with confidence, presenting their work with enthusiasm
and enjoyment. The space for dancing is large and it must seem enormous
to some of the younger competitors.
Throughout
the afternoon the dancers entertained the audience with humour, originality
and total commitment to their ideas. The choice of music was as varied
as the choreographic ideas, from the classical to the warm throb of
the more modern, and also some unusual ethnic music.
It
was good to see so many groups as well as the solos and duets. They
were a real credit to their choreographers. To get a group together
to rehearse and produce a finished production is quite an achievement
and there were some very large ones.
The
adjudicators, Cathy Marston and Stuart Marsden, obviously enjoyed their
task and were full of praise for the work all the competitors had shown
and for the often excellent choice of music and use of musical phrasing.
