The
Resource Pack
The
Resource Pack has been designed to support the Key Stage 3
Citizenship curriculum, which became a compulsory subject
in September 2002, and the dance option within the secondary
PE curriculum. It was designed on the premise that many PE
teachers have had very little dance training and therefore
require some assistance. The ISTD also felt that it would
appeal to ISTD dance teachers teaching at both dance schools
and educational establishments.
The
Resource Pack consists of a video, CD and a teacher's handbook.
The
Video
 |
The
2 hour video features 6 dance routines, representing
6 issues in the Citizenship curriculum.
The video is in 2 sections. The first half takes the
form of a workshop where a section of each dance is
broken down and taught by the choreographer himself,
assisted by 4 dancers. Rehearsal music is provided to
practice the steps as you go along.
|
The
second section is a performance of all the dances by 40 young
dancers who have had some dance training. This shows not only
a more advanced interpretation of the choreography, but also
demonstrates how the individual dances could be combined to
create a school production.
The
Video Shoot
With
a tight schedule of learning at least one routine per week,
the rehearsals proved to be very hard work. But the children
faced up to the challenge and worked extremely hard to learn
and perfect the 6 numbers in time for the video shoot. In
between the dancing, the children were taught and recorded
two songs, including solos, to accompany the dances. The filming
took place over 6 days in a studio and the Lilian Baylis Theatre
at Sadler's Wells, London.
We
sent our photographer, Elaine Mayson, along to photograph
the event.

The
CD
 |
The
inclusion of a CD in the pack enables teachers and students
to rehearse the routines when a television and video
are either not available or appropriate.
|
The
Teacher's Handbook
 |
The
handbook, written by Heather Jarvis, Head of Education
at UNICEF UK, assists in the teaching of the Citizenship
curriculum and expands upon issues raised in the video.
Included are activities, case studies, background information
and suggestions for further resources.
