Ruby
Ginner Awards 2006
The
Ruby Ginner Awards 2006 took place on November 19th
at Winston Churchill Hall, Ruislip, Middlesex.
The Ginner Awards are always popular and this year was
no different with around 150 competitors taking part.
Hence it was a busy day – but also an entertaining
and interesting event.
The main adjudicator for the day was Jayne Cooper. Jayne
is a very gracious adjudicator, who gives clear advice
and has a very encouraging manner. She was assisted
by Penny Childs in the morning and by Roz Jennings in
the afternoon. Roz is also the Classical Greek Faculty
Pianist and so wore two hats on this day, as she was
also the accompanist for the afternoon session, together
with John Hoskins who played for the morning.

The competition consists of a class that tests the participants’
ability to work with the Classical Greek technique,
and includes musical interpretation and spontaneous
Nature Study. The dancers then perform a Set Sequence
appropriate to their level of study. Overall this format
allows for each dancer to demonstrate their technical
ability, their musicality and their creativity.
The class teachers for 2006 were Karen Collings (Premier),
Amanda Wilkins (Senior), Alison Seddon (Middle) and
myself (Junior).
As a class teacher at these events, you never really
know what to expect of the children before you. Therefore
the ultimate task is to relax the candidates and give
them material that will allow them to show their best
work – although this is sometimes easier said
than done! However my classes this year responded with
a great sense of enthusiasm and enjoyment and really
made the most of the creative sequences I had arranged.
Of course, responsive, well trained dancers make the
class teachers’ job much easier – but the
knock on effect is that the adjudicator’s job
becomes much, much harder. Miss Cooper commented on
the very good, and continually improving, standard of
work the Classical Greek technique can produce. She
encouraged the dancers to really appreciate the music
in order that their dancing can be truly musical. She
also reminded them to remember to fully extend their
limbs right up to the very end of the fingers and toes,
in order to create good lines.
There were also two important presentations made on
the day. The first was the Abbey Life Cup which is presented
to a Classical Greek School who have shown outstanding
support for Faculty Events. This year it was awarded
to the Buckhurst Hill and Woodford School, who have
always actively supported every event for many years.
This school has two generations of the same family currently
teaching, namely Sonia Bond, Juliet Locks, Emma-Jane
Padfield and Lucy Pohl and it was wonderful that they
could all be there to accept the award together –
something of a rarity I believe!
The second presentation was the Daphne Hawkesworth Cup
which is given in recognition of Outstanding Service
to the Classical Greek Dance Faculty. This year the
recipient was Karen Collings. Karen is a staunch supporter
of Classical Greek. She is both a committee member and
examiner. She has contributed to the revision of our
syllabus in a major way by creating many of the newer
Set Sequences, and is currently working on a New Boys
Syllabus.
She has organised countless demonstrations for various
congresses and teaches on the Summer School courses
– all on top examining for the Modern and Tap
Faculties and teaching students and children at the
Totnes School of Dance in Devon. For the Ruby Ginner
Awards she was also in charge of printing the programmes,
organising the music and making the announcements, as
well as teaching the Premier class – which sums
up just how involved in our Faculty Karen is. Those
who work with her will also know how her refreshing
sense of humour and easy personality make her a delight
to work alongside.
In her acceptance, Karen thanked her parents for their
constant support and her first teacher, Pamela de Waal,
for giving her a love of dance. She said that she was
honoured to have the opportunity to pass this love of
dance on to others. It is quite evident, from the quality
of her students who took part, that she has certainly
done so.
So, all in all, another super day. Thanks have to be
given to the organiser, Penny Childs, for producing
yet another smooth running, professional day. And to
all the others, without whom we would never cope. You
know who you are – and we do thank you!
For your diaries, the Awards this year will be held
on Saturday November 3rd 2007.
