| Southern
Easter Holiday Course
On
April 8th, the second Classical Greek Easter Course was held
in the South. Traditionally held at HQ in London, the decision
to hold two courses, one in the North and the other in the
South has proved exceptionally successful.
The
Southern Course attracted some 45 young dancers from schools
across the region. Some had already studied Classical Greek
as part of their dance training, others had Greek festival
dances and so wanted to check their technique, and some had
no experience of Greek and simply wanted to see what it was
all about.
Whatever
the reason for coming, all went away having had an enjoyable
and enlightening day. After a general warm-up, everyone went
on to have both a lyrical and athletic class, this year taught
by Pauline Willingale and Pippa Whippy. Two very different
classes given by two very different teachers which meant that
the students had a chance to experience the very wide spectrum
of styles and qualities that make up Classical Greek.
The
Scholarship class was taken by Carol Vasko and adjudicated
by Kay Ball and Lorna Rookledge, who had
a difficult task given the enthusiasm and quality of dancing
that was demonstrated. The Scholarship was awarded jointly
to Lauren Oakley (pupil of Yasmin Taylor-Hazzard) and to Eloise
Curry (Sally Brenner). Commendation were given to Megan Cox
(Emjay School), Rosalind Carrie (Sally Brenner), Amy Butler
(Helen Marmot), Samantha Graydon and Alice Vanstone (both
Sally Brenner).
The
afternoon was a teachers session where the new examination
formats were explained, new introductory sequences taught
and the Grade 6 syllabus reviewed. All of this work was presented
by Kay Ball in her usual clear and insightful way.
The
day was a great success with many asking when the next course
will be. All in all, very encouraging for Classical Greek
Dance in the South!
