Easter
Choreographic Workshop
Sunday
1st April 2007 was, for many, the start of the Easter
holiday. For a group of children from the Yorkshire
area, it was the start of a long and dance-packed day.
The Easter Choreographic Workshop has been running for
a number of years and started as part of the Easter
Holiday Courses that used to involve teachers and students,
where lots of different taster classes were offered,
taught by various lecturers. This type of course is
no longer permitted, and so the Choreographic Workshop
aims to carry on this basic idea, and give children
a taster of the different styles within Classical Greek
Dance, under a central choreographic theme.

The day was organised by Diane Sugden, and was led by
Kay Ball and Karen Collings. The day started with an
energetic warm-up class taken by Kay Ball, who then
taught a ballwork class and created a ballwork sequence
where the children admirably coped with a fairly complex
and challenging routine. Ballwork is always huge fun
and all the laughing meant that a much needed break
ensued.
Karen Colllings then designed a performance piece that
used scarves and partnering, to the theme of 'Over the
Rainbow' which the children also sang. It was a delightful
way of introducing the idea of Choric work to young
dancers. After much rehearsing the children finished
the day with a performance of the work that they had
created for their family and friends. The performance
went well and although a number of balls went flying
the wrong way I don't think any actually hit a member
of the audience!
The children had a great time and the teachers were
exhausted, which usually means that the day was a success!
Many thanks to Kay West for allowing us to use her studios
– we are already looking forward to next year.
