Classical
Greek Festival Finals 2007
The
Finals of the Classical Greek Festival for 2007 took
place on Saturday 5th May , at the Mermaid Conference
and Events Centre, Blackfriars, London.
This was our second visit to the Mermaid, and we were
once again impressed by the welcome we received and
with the standard of the facilities.
The Festival Finalists were selected from four regional
heats that took place between February and March. These
Heats were adjudicated by senior members of the Classical
Greek Faculty, and as such everyone dancing at the Finals
had already shown excellence in performance, polish
and, most importantly, excellence in Classical Greek
technique and quality of movement. Therefore the standard
of the day was very high, and the audience were treated
to a varied and exciting programme, which reflected
the many styles that comprise Classical Greek Dance.

The
two adjudicators assigned with the task of awarding
places were Miss Drusilla Duffill and Mrs Cynthia Carr.
Both ladies are experienced adjudicators, which was
made evident by the comments that were made to each
and every competitor when it came to the actual adjudication
of the various sections. This was much appreciated by
all, but particularly by those dancers who were not
placed, because they did at least go away knowing that
their efforts were recognised and acknowledged.
The job of adjudicating is never easy, and it must have
been doubly difficult on this day because of the high
overall standard. However, I did overhear one comment
that seemed to sum it up very well: “Its like
a box of luxury chocolates, each one excellent in its
own way, but we all still have our own particular favourite.”
A lot of work goes into the Festival in terms of the
teachers who train the dancers and produce such quality
work, the dancers themselves and the team of organisers
who run the day. A huge thank you to each of you for
helping to make the day what it was – a wonderful
celebration of Classical Greek Dance.
