Classical Greek Video
The launch
of the Classical Greek Dance Vocational video on Monday 8th April at
ISTD HQ was an inspiring and happy occasion. The atmosphere was friendly
with a warm welcome for everyone from the Classical Greek Dance Faculty
Committee.

Members,
teachers, dancers, parents, adjudicators and examiners were all represented,
and we were pleased to have representatives from the British Federation
and All England adjudicators, who joined us on this special day.
Chairman,
Sonia Bond, opened the proceedings with her usual charm and introduced
the film crew from Missing Link Productions, the makers of the video,
on hand to show the video on their large screen. This was divided into
four parts, two in the morning and two in the afternoon, with a break
for lunch and a time for socialising at midday.

Cynthia
Carr, the Project Manager and Rehearsal Director, talked us through
the video with flair and enthusiasm. After each quarter the video was
stopped and we had a demonstration by the dancers in the studio, showing
some of the degrees of variation within each syllabus. Classical Greek
Dance is such a lovely artistic and creative form of dance we do not
want it to become too stereotyped and rigid in its interpretation. Members
of the audience were asked if they would like to participate and the
committee and examiners were on hand to answer any queries that arose.
We also
heard reminiscences of Ruby Ginner and the Ginner Mawer School, and
the advantages Classical Greek Dance had given them, from Anita Landa,
Ann Cornford, Rhona Hart, Susan Mitchell-Smith and Diana Griffiths.
On a recent
visit to India, where I was suddenly called upon to give an impromptu
talk/demonstration about Classical Greek Dance, this video would have
proved invaluable. So many times we are asked, 'What is Classical Greek
Dance?' and here we have an explanation of the historical background,
excerpts from performances as well as the technical sequences with a
press of a button.
It certainly
was a special day and one to be proud of.
