Ruby
Ginner Awards
Cecil
Sharp House seemed to be bursting at the seams on Saturday 2nd November
with children of all ages and sizes squeezing into the changing rooms
and dancing up and down the corridors.

Olivia-Leigh
Stevenson, winner of the Premier Grade Photographs by Tony Devereux |
They were
there to compete in the Ruby Ginner Awards 2002, some having started
their journeys very early that morning but all seemingly full of energy
and anticipation.
The adjudicators,
Cynthia Carr and Julia Ellis were full of praise for the young competitors,
giving us a quality adjudication with some constructive criticism.

| Adjudicators,
Cynthia Carr & Julia Ellis |
The day
started with the Junior Grade where there were a lot of promising young
dancers to be seen in two lovely classes taken by Karen Collings. Cynthia
Carr told the children to think of music like sentences with commas
and full stops.

Heather
Wright,
Junior Grade winner |
The Senior
Grade was a nightmare for the adjudicators, who thanked Kay Ball for
an inspirational class which they had enjoyed tremendously, but with
two large and varied classes choosing a winner had been extremely difficult.
Julia Ellis congratulated the youngsters on their excellent elevation
and footwork, but asked for more clarity of line in body turn, especially
in the air.
The Daphne
Hawkesworth Cup was awarded to Roz Jennings, who has helped so much
with the music for Classical Greek dancing. Unfortunately she was unable
to attend so Carol Vasko received the award (and the applause) on her
behalf from our new Chairman, Kay Ball.

Alice
Butcher, winner of the Middle Grade Section |
Carol
Vasko took two beautiful classes for the Middle Grade, which gave the
competitors plenty of opportunities to display their talents. It was
a large section with over 40 children taking part, showing some promising
musicality with expressive feeling.
The Premier
students were given a very challenging class by Karen Collings, but
they rose to the occasion and were congratulated for their work by the
adjudicators who called it a super class.

Congratulations
to all the teachers and to Lucy Pohl and her many helpers for organising
this very worthwhile day. John Hoskins, as usual, accompanied the proceedings
on the piano, which helped enormously towards the success of the day.
These
Awards always give one a feeling of optimism for the future of Classical
Greek Dance with such a lot of talented young dancers and teachers appearing
each year.
