Hawkesworth Cup 2004
The
Daphne Hawkesworth Cup 2004 was awarded to Pamela de Waal
for her outstanding contribution to Classical Greek Dance.
Pamela started dancing at the age of 4 in Cape Town, South
Africa, where she studied all disciplines of Dance and Drama,
including Greek Dance with Jean Strapp from 11-16 years of
age.
Moving
to England she joined the Arts Educational Schools in Tring
where she passed Advanced Solo Seal Ballet at the early age
of 17 years, and continued her Greek Dance training with Olive
Ripman. She remembers well a two week Summer School at Stratford
on Avon, where she was taught by Nancy Sherwood among others
during the day, the evenings being spent at the theatre watching
Shakespeare with Paul Schofield and Robert Helpman.
After
leaving college Pamela joined the Markova and Dolan Ballet
Company but stayed in England when the Company now known as
the English National Ballet went on tour. She started teaching
in the Torbay area about 45 years ago and runs a very large
and fully comprehensive dance school, Classical Greek Dance
being one of the main subjects.
Many
of her pupils have gone on to very successful careers within
the dance world, reaching West End productions, various ballet
companies as Principals and Soloists such as Francesca Filpi,
former adjudicator at the Ruby Ginner Awards. Many run their
own dance schools such as Karen Collings, now a Classical
Greek, Tap and Modern Examiner and Classical Greek Committee
Member, who feels she owes Pamela a great debt of gratitude.
