Choreographic
Competition
Sunday
4th and Monday 5th April
The
Choreographic Competition this year was held at a new venue
as the ISTD Headquarters were unavailable.
Penny Childs, the organiser, had managed to find at quite
short notice a lovely little theatre, the Winston Churchill
Hall in Ruislip. With raised seats and a good sized stage
it was ideal for our requirements making the whole competition
a very special occasion for the young choreographers and their
dancers.
The
Adjudicator was Miss Elizabeth Witt, an experienced choreographer
herself, who has won numerous choreographic awards. She was
very encouraging to the children and students throughout the
day and spoke of the high standard of work shown.

‘Faces
Behind the Masks’11-13 years Highly Commended |
I
had to keep reminding myself that the choreography had all
been thought out and arranged by the youngsters themselves.
What a lot of promise for the future! The basic technique
was also strong with the children’s interpretation of
their themes both powerful and impressive.
In
the youngest age group, 10 years and under, we had some delightful
dances and ideas very well interpreted by the young choreographers
showing a lovely use of hand and arm movements. They all did
supremely well and are to be congratulated on having the confidence
to carry through their ideas to the finished performance.
The
11 - 13 years section came up with some very well thought
out themes and choreography. A little more adventurous than
the Juniors, with good use of the Classical Greek technique
and excellent use of stage and ground patterns. Some very
sincere and well presented stage performances were shown.

Winners
Duets 11-13 years
Jessie Waterfield & Bethan Williams |
The
standard of the 14 - 21 years section was as Miss Witt said,
‘quite phenomenal’. The quality of the choreography
was stunning with some strong work shown. The characterisation
and emotions were beautifully portrayed by the dancers.
It
was a very uplifting and encouraging day with a feast of new
choreography showing some excellent dance and drama. I congratulate
the choreographers, dancers and their teachers for the very
high level of achievement they have reached and look forward
to seeing them at the next competition.
I
would also like to thank Penny Childs for organising the event
and all those people who worked backstage and front of house
and helped to make the occasion such a success.
