Club
Dance Faculty
The
Club Dance Faculty (formerly known as the Alternative
Rhythms Faculty) was formed in 1999 under the joint
Chairmanship of Anne Lingard and Nicky Miles.
The Faculty was created to promote current dance trends
being enjoyed by the general public and to introduce
them to ISTD dancing schools. In its first year the
Faculty was invited to present its work at the Worthing
and Spring Congresses, resulting in an instant demand
by dance teachers for further material to take back
to their schools.
In
2000 a technical video focusing on the Argentine Tango
and Salsa was produced, as was a suggested syllabus
for examinations in both these dances and the Mambo.
The Faculty has since introduced other popular dance
styles into the Society including West Coast Swing,
Milonga and Lindy Hop.
Most
of these dance styles have strongly retained their original
character and have returned to the atmospheric settings
of clubs, bars and cafés, hence the Faculty’s
new name.
Utilising
the knowledge and experience of its members, the Club
Dance Faculty is currently amending its existing syllabi
to keep up to date with changes in the club dance scene.
The
Salsa syllabus will be split into the two main Salsa
club styles, New York and Cuban, and a Merengue syllabus
is also being developed to provide the dance teacher
with the complete Salsa club experience.
The
Argentine Tango syllabus is currently being updated
to include further moves and ways to enhance improvisation
and choreography. This will be accompanied by syllabi
for the Milonga and Tango Valse thus completing the
Tango trilogy enjoyed within the current Argentine Tango
scene.
2005
will see the launch of the new Lindy Hop syllabus. The
Faculty is currently working closely with Jitterbugs
Club in London to produce a comprehensive syllabus whilst
still maintaining the slick and authentic Jazz styles
this dance should demonstrate. When completed, the syllabus
will be accompanied by an interactive DVD and a special
Lindy Hop showcase is being planned for this exciting
launch.
