Big Dance’s Big Thank You

In July 2010, the ISTD ran a series of lunchtime taster sessions as part of the T-Mobile Big Dance 2010 programme. Held at our studios in Old Street, these 45 minute classes were aimed at those living or working in the local area and allowed them to try out a number of dance styles from Foxtrot to Street Dance and Tap. (A full write up of the event may be found on page 46 of DANCE issue 453).

Big Dance, Dancing on ParliamentHowever, this ISTD event, ‘Lunch with a side of Salsa’, was a small part of the larger Big Dance and, on 1st November, the ISTD along with other organisations who organised events during the Big Dance week were invited to a drinks reception at London’s Living Room in City Hall. The stunning panoramic view of the city skyline was the setting for Big Dance to offer thanks to all those who contributed to what was an extremely successful week of dance.

We were all welcomed by Munira Mirza (Mayoral Advisor for Arts and Culture) who introduced a speech from Moria Swinbank, Chief Executive of The Legacy Trust, which sponsored the bi-annual festival this year. Following on from this, a representative from each one of the five Big Dance Hubs highlighted their experiences, noting their triumphs and the lessons they learnt.

The common thread throughout the speeches was the concept of collaboration: each of the hubs discussed how they really enjoyed working with dance providers in their areas and how well the hubs worked together as a collective to deliver this event.

“It was beneficial for the ISTD to work alongside other dance providers in London helping to establish our role as a key player in the dance sector”

The thank you event was the perfect ending to a fantastic opportunity for all involved to help bring dance into the forefront of the public consciousness. It was beneficial for the ISTD to work alongside other dance providers in London helping to establish our role as a key player in the dance sector.

We would like to sincerely thank those who were involved with ‘Lunch with a side of Salsa’ and look forward to taking part in the Big Dance again in 2012.
