ISTD Qualifications

The ISTD has been offering experienced ISTD teachers two highly regarded, internationally recognised advanced level teaching qualifications for many years.  The ISTD’s Licentiate and Fellowship build on the skills learnt in the initial teacher training qualifications and combine this with the knowledge and experience that come with practice as a teaching practitioner.

Licentiate

  • Key Objective:

This qualification further builds on the skills learnt in the DDE, CDE, the Associate Diploma for Theatre Dance teachers or the Associate for Dancesport teachers and tests the competent dance teacher further both in syllabus knowledge and teaching skill.

  • Entry Requirements:

Theatre Dance: You must be 23 or above, hold the DDE, CDE or Associate Diploma in the relevant genre, have passed the Advanced 1 examination in the relevant genre and comply with any other specific criteria listed in the relevant syllabi.  It is also recommended that you have five years teaching experience or more.

Dancesport: You must be 21 or above, hold the DDE, CDE or Associate in the relevant genre or have completed a minimum of two years of responsible teaching in that genre.

  • What happens next?

You may apply for Full Membership of the Society.

After becoming a member, you are eligible to enter candidates for any ISTD examinations, in both Theatre Dance and Dancesport genres.

You can apply to progress to the Fellowship examination or onto the ISTD’s selection of accredited advanced dance teaching qualifications – click here for more information.

If teacher training is an interest of yours, you can also apply to become an Approved Tutor on the DDI/DDE programme.

Theatre Dance: This qualification also allows you to stand for election to your Faculty committee.

Dancesport: This qualification also allows you to stand for election to your Faculty committee and to apply to the British Dance Council for a Championship Adjudicators’ Licence to adjudicate for higher level competitions in the genre in which you are qualified.

Fellowship

  • Key Objective:

This is the highest teaching qualification offered by the ISTD, further building on the skills and experienced gained through the Licentiate qualification.  You are therefore expected to show a depth and breadth of technical knowledge and artistry as well as a high standard of teaching.

  • Entry Requirements:

Theatre Dance: You must be 28 or above, hold the Licentiate and Advanced 2 qualifications in the relevant genre, have completed eight years of teaching in that genre and comply with any other specific criteria listed in the relevant syllabi.
