ISTD Qualifications

The ISTD offers highly regarded internationally recognised advanced level teaching qualifications: Licentiate and Fellowship. These qualifications build on the skills learnt in the initial teacher training qualifications and combine this with the knowledge and experience that come with practice as a teaching practitioner.

Licentiate

This qualification builds on the skills learnt in the initial teacher training and evidences higher level syllabus knowledge and teaching skill.

On completion of this qualification, you can –

  • Apply for Full Membership of ISTD and eligible to enter candidates for any ISTD examinations, in both Theatre Dance and Dancesport genres.
  • Apply to progress to the Fellowship examination, ISTD’s highest teaching qualification and eventually apply to become an ISTD examiner
  • Apply to become an Approved Tutor on the DDI/DDE programme.
  • Apple to progress onto ISTD’s regulated teaching qualifications – Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy, BA and MA degree courses offered in conjunction with Middlesex University
  • Stand for election to your Faculty committee
  • Dancesport - apply to the British Dance Council for a Championship Adjudicators’ Licence to adjudicate for higher level competitions in the genre in which you are qualified

In order to apply to take the Licentiate exam you need to have one of the following:

Theatre Dance: You must have passed the CDE / DDE or Associate Diploma (outside of the EU) in the relevant genre and have passed the Advanced 1 examination in the relevant genre.

Dancesport: You must be 21 or above, hold the DDE, CDE or Associate in the relevant genre and have completed a minimum of two years of responsible teaching in that genre.

To prepare for the Licentiate exam you can:

  1. Attend an Essential Learning course for Licentiate at our ISTD2 studios in East London. To find out more, please visit - http://www.istd.org/courses-and-training/
  2. Study privately with an ISTD tutor. Please visit our online dance directory of ISTD qualified teachers – www.dance-teachers.org

EU residents - If you hold the Associate, but not the Associate Diploma in Theatre Dance, you will need to upgrade your qualifications to the DDI/DDE in order to be eligible for the exam. For more information on this please contact the Education and Training team at gbridge@istd.org  

NON-EU residents – As DDI/DDE is not offered to Non-EU residents, you will need to complete your Associate Diploma to be eligible for the Licentiate exam.

Fellowship

This is the highest teaching qualification offered by the ISTD, further building on the skills and experienced gained through the Licentiate qualification.  You are therefore expected to show a depth and breadth of technical knowledge and artistry as well as a high standard of teaching.

In addition to the benefits gained from Licentiate, on completion this qualification, you can apply to train as an ISTD Examiner for the relevant Faculty.

In order to apply to take the Fellowship exam you need to have one of the following:

Theatre Dance - You must have passed the Licentiate or Level 6 DDP qualification in the relevant genre and have passed the Advanced 2 examination in the relevant genre.

Dancesport - You must have held the Licentiate in the relevant genre for a minimum of three years.

IMPORTANT

If you do not fulfil the entry requirements for ISTD Licentiate or Fellowship but feel you have the required knowledge or experience, you can apply for APEL to access these qualifications. The Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) scheme takes account of your professional experience and unregulated qualifications to enable you to by-pass the usual requirements for ISTD Licentiate and Fellowship qualifications.
