USISTD
Dance Congress 2003
On
Saturday 13th October the USISTD hosted a Dance Congress in
New York City at the Sandra Cameron Dance Center. This was
the first event of this kind to be held in many years. Sixty
people attended including Phillip Stephens, Cher Rutherford,
Mark Kotowski and Martin Smith who are members of the USISTD
National Committee.
Special
thanks must be given to Mark Kotowski whose planning and organisational
skills created an educational experience that everyone enjoyed.
Michael Choi, Lorraine Muller and Ellen Tittler assisted him.
Phillip
Stephens, the President of the USISTD, was the Master of Ceremonies
and introduced the eight guest lecturers. The first lecture
was given by Sandra Cameron and dealt with American Style
Social Dance. The second lecture was given by Cher Rutherford
on West Coast Swing. The third lecture was given by Martin
and Desiree Smith and dealt with International Foxtrot technique.
Tonja Garamella gave the fourth lecture. She worked with the
idea of developing quality in International Cha Cha Cha.
The
fifth lecture was given by Mark Kotowski who spoke about developing
choreography for the International Waltz. Michael Choi and
Marta Wolfart demonstrated the basic amalgamation and development.
The next lecture was given by Teresa Wood who introduced ISTD
Disco/Freestyle and Rock ‘n’ Roll to the group.
The seventh lecture was given by Dan Calloway who discussed
choreography for Gold syllabus Latin – Rumba and Jive.
The final lecture was given by Frank Regan who spoke about
dance kinaesthetics. Sandra Cameron assisted him. Thank you
to these teachers.
The
2003 USISTD Dance Congress was a great success. It was varied
and covered a wide body of material. I hope that the USISTD
will organise a Dance Congress annually.
