Grand
Disco Medallist Festival 2005
Sunday
16th October 2005, Disco and Rock’n’Roll Grand
Finals' Day at the Guildford Spectrum, which was a very exciting
and long day for many young dancers who along with their parents
and school supporters began to form a queue long before the
opening time.
The
DFR Faculty and their sponsors The Bear and Beanie Shop, Skansen
Giftware and Boyd's Bears must have been very happy with the
response and support they received. There were many familiar
faces which it is always very nice to see, but also lots of
new ones and this combination goes a long way towards creating
an electric atmosphere and a great air of anticipation.
Adjudicators
for the Line Dance and Rock’n’Roll were Betty
Bouston, Amanda Hughes, Nigel Kirk, Pat Lait, Paul Streatfield,
(DFR Faculty Vice-Chairman) Rachel Wadey, Suzanne Hammond
and Maria Howse.
At
10.00am after a short practice, main compère for the
day, Nicky Miles, introduced the members of the DFR Faculty,
many of whom had spent Saturday evening setting up the stage
etc. ready for the Sunday. We were now under way and with
the Line Dance Finals first, there was great support for the
competitors who all gave of their best, with good interpretation
and use of technique.

The Bear and Beanie Shop delighted Line Dance winners again
this year with an appealing Bear complete with specially embroidered
T-shirt tucked into their fantastic trophies.
With
a change of adjudication panel the Pairs Competition commenced
at 1.30pm with some of the categories being well supported,
whilst others were lacking in numbers. Dancers covered the
floor well with some interesting choreography and good technique.
Adjudicators being Margaret Connon, Janet Clark, Derek Green,
Julie Earnshaw, Vernon Kemp and Terry Palmer.
The
adjudication panel changed again and it was Rock’n’Roll
time. This is always a very exciting section and today was
no exception with some very lively performances coming from
all grades and as always the costumes were in good taste and
in keeping with the style of dance. All pupils taking part
seem to love this style and it shows in their dancing.
Winners in this section were:
Under
8 Rosettes
Charlotte Loxley & Effie Hastelow
Under 10 Bronze & Below
Kilian Smith & Chloe Barrett-Blake
Under 12 Bronze & Below
Amy Honour & Emily Honour

Over 14 Gold Star
Stacey Grantham & Andrew Duke
Sponsors,
Boyd's Bears again this year treated the Rock 'n' Roll winners
to a bag of goodies complete with a limited edition bear to
go with their magnificent trophies.
Lastly
we come to the Solo section with the adjudication panel as
for the Pairs section. Sadly some of the dancers did not wait
for this section, which reduced the entries in some of the
grades, but this is understandable as many have long journeys
home and day school next day. However, there was still a lot
of energy, enthusiasm and determination to do well. Again
routines and musical interpretation were excellent.
Skansen
Giftware, supported us again this year and generously sponsored
the Pairs and Solos events with a selection of very desirable
Bean Bag Bears to accompany the coveted trophies.
And
so it was all over for another year, a competition day packed
with entertainment, enthusiasm and energy, and fabulous music
by DJ Ian Jordan. Well done to all the teachers for their
dedication, to the pupils for their dancing and also their
hard work during the year. Let us not forget the parents and
friends of the pupils who give their tireless support and
the management and staff of the Spectrum for a job well done
and to our sponsors, The Bear and Beanie Shop, Skansen Giftware
and Boyd's Bears for another year of great prizes. But above
all, our thanks and appreciation go to the members of the
DFR Faculty Committee for the hours spent planning and preparing,
which makes for another well-run, successful and enjoyable
day of dancing and competition.
We
all hope to see you again next year - Sunday 15th October
2006 at The Guildford Spectrum.
