Summer
School 2000
Report written by Pauline Willingale on the students course held at Christ's
Hospital School, Horsham 20th-26th August.
I am a new devotee
to Classical Greek Dance and went along to Summer School knowing very
little about it. I was a bit nervous- here was I definitely 'over 21'
a raw food eater with a large juicer - would I fit in? It felt strange
at first. The students were all taking exams so there were classes at
Intermediate, Advanced & Associate levels, with a warm up class at 9.30
every morning attended by everyone. Then the younger girls went off to
their classes of Classical Greek, Tap, Character, Jazz & Drama. The students
worked hard all day and half the night preparing for exams on Thursday
& Friday. I was amazed at the amount of work covered and the enthusiasm
with which it was done. As with all groups it takes a while to get to
know each other, but by Tuesday I was feeling comfortable & getting to
know people. We were all feeling stiff and sore for the first few days
and all moaned together!

Summer
School 2000 at Christs Hospital School, Horsham |
I am a qualified
reflexologist and when a teacher strained her calf muscle on the Monday
morning I offered to give her treatment. The news spread and very soon
I was busy, between and after classes, giving reflexology treatments
to the students. It was a great way to de-stress them after all that
hard work they were putting in. What a pleasure it was for me to work
with such responsive clients!
When exams started
on Thursday afternoon, the younger girls had an hour to spare and I offered
to teach them some circle dances. As I usually teach adults it was a
refreshing change to have this lively group. The hour contained much
laughter and silliness and they totally exhausted me (I thought it was
supposed to be the other way round).
Friday was another
exam day and in the afternoon the girls went shopping in Horsham to stock
up on goodies for the party that evening.
The final day arrived
too soon. Time for the show that the girls had been preparing. Exam results,
presents and thank-yous. I looked back to the Sunday before when I had
been worried about coming here and here I was with tears in my eyes because
I did not want to go home. Still there's always next year.
