Imperial
Ballet Notices & Syllabus Notes
Grade
1 Music Section
Teachers please note that candidates should be able to clap the Waltz,
Polka and March unaccompanied in addition to clapping with the music.
Re-Prints - All the technical specifications and syllabus outline
have been reprinted and although there are changes in the wording for
the sake of continuity and clarity there is no change in the syllabus
content or settings.
Failli
- In the Intermediate examination a 'failli' has been added to replace
the cumbersome terminology of 'sissonne ouverte' followed by a 'chassé
passé en avant'. Therefore the demi-contretemps will remain in
the Graded and Intermediate Foundation examinations as a movement that
commences from one leg comprising a temps levé and chassé
passé. From Intermediate and upwards, if this same movement commences
from two feet, it will be termed 'failli'.
Fellowship
Warm-Up - at the barre of approximately 15 mins duration. This is
not a choreographed or syllabus work barre but should reflect the experience
of the teacher in constructing a suitable warm-up for the work to follow.
CD's
- of the John Harrison Grade Music and Miss Rosemary Sarjeant's Class
Examination Music are currently being produced, availability dates will
be posted as soon as possible.

Teachers Group Celebration of Dance
 |
| Happy
participants of the Grade IV Class of 'Celebration of Dance' with Mrs
Patricia Prime |
Sunday
4th November in Watford, 188 children took part and enjoyed performing
their classwork and solos on stage. Mrs Patricia Prime adjudicated and
encouraged all the children with her remarks, noting that the standard
of performance, particularly of the older candidates, had improved since
her last visit. The raffle raised £120 which will go towards a 'Day of
Dance' in 2002.

Imperial
Ballet Teachers Course in Athens
October
2001
Greek warmth and sunshine - and that wasn't just the weather, but also
the welcome that I received from the Imperial Ballet teachers who gathered
in Vrilissia, North East Athens for a five day course. Many of the teachers
did not have an easy journey, one had a seven hour train journey and
even the 'locals' had the Athenian traffic to contend with. My taxi driver's
various attempts to avoid the traffic jams certainly gave me a different
'guided tour' of the city each morning!
 |
 |
Some
of the teachers who attended the
Imperial Ballet course in Athens, Greece |
The
course covered the Vocational examinations, the Grades and the new dances
for Primary, Grades 1 & 2 with the final day being devoted to the Licentiate
examination. It was good to have this day to consider the aspects of
teaching that this examination requires. For our pianist we were fortunate
to have Michalis Chavantas. His musicianship, plus humour, was enjoyed
and appreciated by all concerned especially during the free work.
After working for at least six hours each day on the course most of the
teachers rushed back to their own studios to teach for 4-5 hours, returning
the next morning bright and cheerful, if a little sore!
While
in Athens I was pleased to accept the invitation of Vlassis Klitsiotis
of the British Council to attend a performance of Richard Alston's company.
This proved to be a most enjoyable evening - not just the performance,
but this also was an opportunity to catch up with friends and former
students now based in Athens.
From
my point of view the arrangements ran like clockwork, thanks to Vlassis
and Maria of the British Council. However, the real atmosphere of a course
comes from the enthusiasm of the teachers, thank you all for your good
humour and positive response during the course.
