Fundamentals of Dance

In today's Latin American dancing, we neglect to pay enough attention to the most simple and basic fundamentals of dance.

As the development of Latin American dancing moves closer to an 'exhibition' style, less and less are the dances based on the principals of the dances in their original form. They are losing their authenticity.

Active competitors who also coach are perhaps to blame. Many dancers will be looking to the top of our profession for guidelines, inspiration and the future development of Latin American dance.

In the effort to combine competitiveness and entertainment value, we strive for the trick or gimmick that will 'get the crowd', thus the truth and what really lies behind the choreography often gets hidden.

It is equally important to learn and understand the existing principals that are well proven, to produce a good authentic interpretation before experimenting with or introducing your own ideas. Too often experimental ideas and personal fads are taught to unsuspecting pupils to the detriment of their performance and the good of Latin dancing.

I feel a main priority of any dancer should be to focus on the essence of dance and to study the character of each individual rhythm and its principals.
