Explaining the Latin American Grades

Part Three - Sequencing Stretch

What does sequencing stretch mean and why should we do it?

A sequence in stretch means to follow a natural order. Just as a good dance routine is choreographed to link moves smoothly one to another, so too will a good stretch programme.

Stretches in the Grade examinations follow through without pulse raising or mobilisation in between, therefore the programme will run more smoothly, effectively, with better visual appeal and most importantly with a good ‘feeling’ for the candidate when placement is primarily down one side of the body and then the other.

Another factor of importance is to stretch outer muscles before deep muscles that lay underneath, as in the case of the Gastrocnemius (outer calf muscle) and the Soleus (inner calf muscle).

You know the stretch is right when you feel the lovely sensation of mild tension in the exact muscle you are aiming to stretch. Have fun, discover the lovely feeling of stretch and see how much your dance performance improves as you get with the programme in the Guidance Notes of the Grade Examinations.
