Elizabeth
Romain, Liz, was a member of the Latin American Faculty Committee for
32 years until 2000 and was Chairman for the last two of those years.
During that time she was in no small way responsible for the production
of both the original Revised Technique of Latin American Dancing and
that of our wonderful present day books.
Many
teachers all over the world feel gratitude and warmth towards Liz for
the contribution she has given in furthering their understanding and
development of theoretical training. Last year Elizabeth was given a
special achievement award by the USISTD and as you may have read in
the Summer issue of DANCE, she has recently been elected to the world's
dancing Hall of Fame USA. Elizabeth already holds the Carl Alan Teachers
Award 1973 and the Imperial Award 1990. Teachers in Japan have an endearing
nickname for Liz, it is Madame Dictionary, the reason being her ability
to answer any technical question relating to Latin American and Ballroom
theory without hesitation in an easy to understand way.
This
lovely lady Elizabeth Romain, who has danced since she was 2 years old,
taught dance since the age of 14 years and been an ISTD Examiner for
over 30 years, is respected and loved by the teachers the world over,
not least by teachers at home in England.
We
see in you, Liz, such beauty of spirit. You are a woman who is here
for us, the working teacher. We have been inspired and encouraged by
you when you have examined at our schools or examined us for professional
qualifications. We have enjoyed and learnt much from your natural warm
style of lecturing at Congress over the years. Those who have been trained
by you and still continue so to do are given quality training. Whether
a once a week evening class teacher or world champion dancer, you Liz,
of course, give the same dedication and care to all. The beauty we see
in your smiling face shines with love of dance and of us all.
Elizabeth
Romain has dance in her soul and a love of people in her heart, and
it shows. Elizabeth is brilliant at her work and makes us feel good
about ourselves.
It
has been a sorrow to Liz that she had to resign from the Latin Faculty
Committee before completing her term of office as Chairman due to ill
health, but I know she is happy that the role has been passed to the
capable hands of Lorna Lee. Lorna is charismatic, strong, fair minded
and inspirational. Lorna and Liz are both very much their 'own person'.
I see the aura of each as quite different and yet they possess many
of the same qualities. How fortunate for us and oh, I forgot to say,
just in case you don't know, they are both extremely gifted.
Thank you Liz for all you have done and will continue to do. I speak
for us all, teachers the world over, past and present Latin American
Faculty members and personal friends, we are so glad you have recovered
good health and are back in the job you love and were born for, teaching.
PS:
At 14 years old, Liz had her own studio, a little shop on London Road,
North Cheam. It was right by a bus stop and the rent was 15 shillings
a week!
