Advanced
2 Modern World Premiere
Erratum
The last issue of DANCE contained an article on the
first examinations of the new Advanced 2 Modern syllabus,
which we stated took place at Laine Theatre Arts on
27th March 2008. Since then, Heather Burns, Dance Curriculum
Manager at Preston College, contacted us about her students
who also took their Advanced 2 Modern on the same date.
Congratulations to the following students who were also
the first candidates in the world to take their new
Advanced 2 Modern with examiner Gillian Farr: Sophie
Kellett (Grade A), Bethan Wane (Grade B), Clare Orlandi
(Grade A) and Andrea Fisher (Grade C). The students
were taught by Laura Woods with extra coaching provided
by Barbara Marsden-Smith and Katie Morea.
In June, seven more students from Preston College took
their exam, all gaining A and B grades. They were Matthew
Robinson, Felicity Tabbernor, Dominique Rouse, Victoria
Thomas, Jennifer Thomas, Danielle Walker and Kimberley
Brown.
Apologies for not featuring you in the last issue and
congratulations to all of the above students and their
teachers who all share in this little piece of dance
history.

Thursday
27th March 2008 at Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom marked
a day in history for the dancing world. It was the World
Premiere of the new Advanced 2 Modern examination. Sarah
Wilson and Barbara Evans were part of the development
team responsible for the choreography and preparation
of the new syllabus. From the 29 students entered, the
first five students to take the exam were Ana Marta
Barbosa, Clair Lees, Sam Brown, Adam Elson and Jason
Tinney.
At
the end of their examination, some of the students gave
their feedback, this is what they said:
Jason: “What a relief! We thoroughly enjoyed not
only the exam but also the preparation towards it. This
syllabus is very demanding both technically and in performance
and requires a high level of maturity and understanding
of breath, movement quality and style.”
Ana:“The transition between Advanced 1 and this
level is quite extreme but rewards the dancer with a
strong contemporary and jazz technique.”
Adam: “We are really pleased to have had this
opportunity.”
Students Ana Marta Barbosa and Jason Tinney are two
of the students from Laine Theatre Arts who, along with
students from Bird College and Performers College, danced
the new syllabus at its launch at the Harlequin Theatre,
Redhill in November 2007.
