The
Metamorphosis Dance Company
Metamorphosis
is the dance company of the Caribbean School of Dancing
(CDS) located in Port of Spain, the capital city of
the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
The company was formed in November 1994 by a group of
teachers from CDS who were interested in establishing
a professional dance company. It provides an opportunity
for highly trained young dancers of the school to participate
in high level performances of Classical Ballet, Modern,
Jazz, Tap, Post-Modern and Afro-Caribbean dance.
Metamorphosis is one of the leading dance companies
in Trinidad and Tobago. It seeks to showcase the talents
of Trinidad and Tobago choreographers working in modern
dance, contemporary dance and Afro-Caribbean dance through
one major performance/season per year. Under the artistic
directorship of Nancy Herrera the company provides an
opportunity for young dancers to metamorphose into able
professional dancers as preparation for professional
dance careers, usually abroad.
Once integrated into the company, all dancers are expected
to be proficient, at a minimum, in Classical Ballet
and Modern Dance. Most company members have also achieved
high levels of proficiency in Afro-Caribbean Folk Dance,
Jazz and Tap. The majority of the repertoire is modern
and contemporary.
The company undertook its first international tour to
the UK in 2002 and was invited again in 2004. Delivering
an accessible programme that showed a combination of
dance styles of Trinidad, with Modern, Jazz and Classical
forms, the performances were enthusiastically received.
The company continues to build its repertoire around
contemporary works, many of which have relevance in
a Caribbean context. It aims to develop dancers and
to share this work locally, regionally and internationally.
