'Moving
Matters'
The Linbury Theatre,
Royal Opera House,
London
14th & 15th October 2000
Dance UK are holding 30 tickets
for ISTD teachers until July 2000. The third national Healthier Dancer
Conference will be held in the new Linbury Theatre at the Royal Opera
House, London in October 2000.
History
Established in 1982, Dance UK was
set up for and by the dance profession to listen to its needs and take
action on its behalf. In 1986 Dance UK initiated the Healthier Dancer
Programme by setting up a Medical Advisory Panel. In 1990 the first Healthier
Dancer Conference was held at the Royal Opera House. From 1992-1996 Dance
UK led a national survey into the health of the profession, published
as 'Fit to Dance?' The programme has moved on in leaps and bounds since
then and now has an international reputation for its innovative research,
healthier dancer events and educational work within the professional dance
sector.
Content
The Rt. Hon. Chris Smith, Secretary
of State, will open 'Moving Matters'. The conference will focus on a range
of subjects and issues; these include the incidence of disordered eating,
missed periods and brittle bones in the dance community. This section
entitled 'Your Body, Your Risk', will include some of the leading researchers
and organisations in this field of work today.
After our lunch, provided by Searcys,
delegates can choose between two afternoon sessions. In the Linbury Studio
Theatre some of the latest dance research developments such as 'stress
and bullying in the dance sector' and 'the demystification of the role
of the dance teacher' will be explored. In
the Clore Studio delegates will join workshops on 'The Role of Complementary
Therapies in Dance Injury Management'.
On Sunday, the day starts with complimentary
teas and coffees.We kick off
with a morning on 'Optimum Performance'. This session looks at psychological
tools, such as making the best of your skills, staying focussed and encouraging
students to achieve their 'optimum performance'. Presentations will also
focus on using injury as a positive learning experience, and developing
assertion and confidence.
After lunch, a presentation by a
range of highly skilled practitioners will focus on a lower back injury
and look at how a medical team can best work together on its effective
treatment. The practitioners will clarify their different roles and specialities,
enabling the teacher/dancer to better decide on whom to go to for which
injury. There will also be advice on how best to utilise and access your
local health system. The day will end with a panel of leading artistic
directors discussing dancers' health and wellbeing. Delegates will be
able to ask questions at the end of this session.
