Caught up in a CAREing beat. Dancers around UK join together in first World Dance Week

Friday 7th July 2000

The UK's first ever World Dance Week, sponsored by international development agency, CARE International, has been received enthusiastically by dance groups. World Dance Week, which took place between 17th-25th June 2000, saw dance events in schools, community centres and a pub - all raising funds for CARE International's anti-poverty projects in Africa and Asia.

Dancers from the hit musical Fosse literally kicked off World Dance Week on Saturday 17th June. Four dancers from the hit musical assembled outside the Prince of Wales Theatre in the heart of London's theatreland. But instead of the usual glamorous costumes, they donned tee shirts showing their support for CARE International and for World Dance Week.

The Fosse kick off was followed by a range of dance events in city and country. Balkan folk dancers in the New Forest, Seventies Disco dances in a Manchester secondary school, Tap dancing in Leeds, Line dancing in Birmingham, and a cornucopia of dance styles in Sheffield and Southampton, were just some of the sponsored and paying events organised over the week. Nor were the events confined to the UK - one event took place in Wegberg, Germany.

Dan McLean, Events Manager at CARE International UK, says: 'Everyone can dance or can appreciate others dancing. Dancing is one of the activities that unites people across the world. I am delighted to see such a good reaction to our first ever World Dance Week. But this is only the start of our involvement. I am already beginning to plan for next year's event - how we can make it bigger and even better. Meanwhile, my heartfelt thanks to all those who have taken part in this year's World Dance Week. Let's keep on dancing and keep on CAREing.'

World Dance Week - with its STAMP OUT POVERTY theme - took place all over the UK between 17th and 25th June 2000. Funds raised will go to help CARE International's vital poverty relief work around the world.
