DanceSport International
Ltd. formerly known as Hearn & Spencer Ltd. was originally founded in 1982
by Geoffrey Hearn and Peggy Spencer MBE, who had taken over The Alex Moore
Letter Service, which had been running since 1933.
The Letter Service
was a monthly letter sent out to Dance Teachers all over the world, giving
news and new dance variations. Geoffrey used his technical knowledge as
a qualified Teacher/Examiner to develop the Letter Service to its current
format. The Letter Service is now published every two months and offers
the Dance Teacher a wealth of choreographic ideas for classwork and private
lessons. A complimentary issue is available for any ISTD teacher upon
request.
Malcolm Hearn joined
the Company in 1982 and expanded its Mail order Sales Service from a handful
of books and LP records to today's comprehensive list of goods.
1987 saw the start
of our Video business, with our first title 'Ballroom Lines' and we still
produce top quality videos with some of the world's top competitive couples,
such as Marcus & Karen Hilton MBE, and Jukka Haapalainen & Sirpa Suutari.
1994 saw us get into
the Competitive Dress side of the business which has continued to develop
to today's couture service and Gents Tail Suits and Latin wear.
1994 also saw Geoffrey
& Peggy sell their shares in the business to Malcolm and Keith Hoyle, who
now own the company between them as 50/50 partners. Geoffrey still continues
to write the Letter Service and produce the Videos for us on a freelance
basis.
Keith's first job
was to increase our market share of the shoe business, and we launched
our first shoe catalogue. Then in 1996 we purchased the liquidated stock
of DanceTogs - a well known shoe and accessories business, and with this
came the Exhibition rights to sell their goods at the Open British Championships
in May at Blackpool.
In 1997 we purchased
a Jewellery company called 'Golden Girl' and again their Exhibition rights
at the Blackpool Festival. We now have probably the biggest stand at this
Festival, selling everything the dancer needs.
It was at this time
that we decided to change our business name from Hearn & Spencer Ltd. to
DanceSport International Ltd., as this more accurately reflects the nature
of our business.
Development is an
on-going part of our business, with new shoes being offered for both the
Competitive and Social dancer; we are constantly bringing out new dress
designs and are always on the look-out for new products to add to our range.
We also hope to develop and expand our dealer network all over the world
to be able to offer dancers the ability to purchase from a local source.
We are one of the
few companies able to offer Ballroom & Latin dancers throughout the World
a total service by Mail Order. We are also pleased to welcome many visitors
to our Showroom in Croydon (UK), where customers may browse at their leisure,
listen to CD's, view videos and select shoes etc. from the stocks always
available. To improve sales in your Dance School why not consider selling
DanceSport products, such as Dance shoes. Very attractive discounts are
available, and for those schools who can sell in excess of 100 pairs of
shoes (Girls', Boys', Ladies & Gents combined) wholesaler prices are offered.
We have always worked together with dance teachers to ensure that only
the correct products are sold to dancers of all ages, whilst keeping retail
prices as low as possible.
