UK & INTERNATIONAL NEWS FLASH

The ISTD wishes to announce changes to the Associate Diploma, which we hope will benefit our teachers. An explanation of the changes being introduced overseas is given below. UK teachers should ensure that they take note of the last section explaining the marking system for the Associate Diploma from 1st January 2001 as this will affect UK and International teachers.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATE DIPLOMA
From 1st January 2001

The three year teaching programme for the Associate Diploma was introduced in the UK in 1997 and has now reached the end of the pilot scheme. During the three years, much interest has been shown by teachers around the world in participating in this programme. We are pleased to announce that the Associate Diploma teaching programme is going to be extended overseas from 1st January 2001.

If you have gained Associate status and wish to enter candidates for examinations, you will embark on this programme and you will be given a portfolio to complete with details of your teaching experience and courses attended.

We are aware of the difficulties in some countries in attending courses, so this requirement will be phased in gradually. Until 1st January 2004, the number of stipulated hours for the courses you will be expected to attend will be as follows:

A suggested reading list to help with some of these subjects can be obtained from Headquarters.

By the end of a three year period, if you have completed the requirements, you can enter for the Associate Diploma examination.

The Associate Diploma examination will be split into two parts to come in line with the UK. You will be given the benefit of a tutorial with the examiner at the end of Part 1 before proceeding to Part 2 on a separate occasion. This gives you time to improve aspects of your work before taking the final part of your examination.

Part 1 will be as follows:

  • General discussion
  • Class
  • Dance arrangement
  • Tutorial

Part 2 will be as follows:

  • Teaching individual exercises as requested by the examiner
  • Coaching one-to-one
  • General approach to teaching
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy

The pupils taking part in the Part 1 class must be your own pupils. They should be either working on the Grade or have passed the Grade in which you are conducting your class, but they should not have passed the Grade above. The children will be provided for Part 2 and this will be arranged by the British Council, your local organiser or a local examiner.

ASSOCIATE DIPLOMA NEW MARKING SYSTEM UK & INTERNATIONAL
From 1st January 2001

The candidate's portfolio and two sets of previous examination results should be submitted to Headquarters for approval as a condition of entry before applying for the examination. These will not be given a mark as part of the examination.

Part 1 will be marked out of 100 with a 65 pass mark. The candidate will receive a copy of the Part 1 result sheet and if the mark given is lower than 65, Part 1 will have to be taken again. Otherwise the candidate can proceed to Part 2. Part 2 will also be marked out of 100 with a 65 pass mark and a result sheet will be issued.

Details of the components marked in the examination are given in the syllabus outline for each Faculty, which can be obtained from ISTD Headquarters.

Candidates who have passed Part 1 should endeavour to take Part 2 within 12 months. If Part 2 has not been successfully passed within 18 months, Part 1 will have to be taken again.

Please contact the Head of UK Examinations, Mrs Cathy Browne, or the Head of International Examinations, Miss Michelle Bassett, if you have any queries.
