News
Just
over a year ago, in May 2001, I was writing about the death of Miss Margaret
Giles at the age of 94, and the bequest to the library of her books on
dance. These, together with the bound copies of The Dancing Times which
she passed to us in 1991, have proved to be of great value to many of our
researchers.

Miss
Margaret Giles, c.1930's around the time that her school was first established |
A
delightful 'period' photograph of Miss Giles is now in the archives, showing
her in 1930's dress, just at the time she was starting her school of dance
in Kent.
She
went on to found the Gordon Edwards Charitable Trust, and the young dancers
who have benefited from this, as well as visitors who come to research
in the library, are greatly indebted to her, for her foresight, energy
and generosity.
Suggestions
for Acquisitions
The library now holds good information coverage on all ISTD Faculty disciplines,
but I would much appreciate some input from members of each of the Faculties
concerned.
All
that is needed would be a short visit by one or two committee members to
check their relevant sections, spot any gaps, and if possible, suggest
any publications or videos that might improve the information in their
own area.
Now
that Dance Books have moved to the country, my weekly visits to browse
through the contents pages of new books, and pick up out of print old editions,
have been seriously curtailed! Their catalogues and press releases do help,
but actually glancing through the contents of the book soon shows if it
would be of interest to our members, or of any help towards their research.
Next
time you are at Headquarters, please spare 10 or 15 minutes to improve
the background knowledge available to your students and enhance the discipline
that has ruled your life.
