Update
on New Teaching Qualifications
The
ISTD is currently working towards QCA accreditation
of its teaching qualifications. To keep people
up to date with the initial developments, please
find below a description of the new qualifications.
There
will be regular updates as we approach January
and developments occur, so make sure you log on
to the website for further information.

Why
are the Qualifications changing?
The
aim is for the ISTD to enhance its professional
teaching qualifications in line with the requirements
from QCA and ultimately the Government's aim to
ensure appropriately qualified teachers across
all sectors. Therefore, the awarding bodies in
the dance sector have had to revise the existing
structure.
The
new qualifications are to be as flexible as possible
meaning that candidates can gain basic teaching
skills from any dance awarding bodies, but add
the specific genre in which they want to concentrate,
also from another awarding body. The new qualifications
will apply to both Dance Sport and Theatre faculties.

International
Students
Candidates
within the UK and Europe (those countries currently
delivering ISTD examinations) will progress from
the existing teaching qualifications to the new
within the same timescale. For those candidates
outside of Europe, the existing teaching qualifications
will continue for the foreseeable future. However,
the ISTD does fully intend to introduce the new
teaching qualifications to the rest of the world.
QCA
accreditation for the new teaching qualifications
should provide added credibility with overseas
Governments.

What
is the Timescale?
The
new qualifications will be available from 1st
January 2004. They will run concurrently with
the existing qualifications until 31st August
2004. The Associate/Associate Diploma qualifications
will cease from this date.

Can
I still enter students into examinations after
1st January 2004?
If
you have been entering students to date and you
have either Associate/Associate Diploma, we will
expect you to have undertaken and completed the
new teaching qualifications within a two-year
period. Whilst you are undertaking this study
you will remain eligible to enter students. For
any new candidates, you will be expected to complete
the new qualifications, depending on the level
of APEL, before entering students for examinations.

How
are the new qualifications to be delivered?
An
ISTD-approved tutor supervises the candidate's
teaching. The tutor must ascertain that the candidate
has completed the supervised teaching practice
required. Tutors appointed by the ISTD, are subject
to approval by the relevant Faculty, and are of
Licentiate status (or above). Therefore, they
could be:
Part of the training faculty within the candidate's
training establishment.
The candidate's employer or teacher.
Taken from a 'tutor pool' established by
the ISTD.
Tutors
will receive specific training in how to assess
and collate evidence for compilation in the candidate's
portfolio.

Where
will I be able to study the new qualifications?
All
candidates for these qualifications must be registered
through ISTD approved centres. These approved
centres will consist of Vocational Colleges, and
independent schools.
Each
centre will have to go through an approval process,
which includes inspection, to be able to deliver
the new qualifications. If satisfactory, they
will be approved for 3 years. Centres will undergo
re-approval after three years. Assessment of the
teaching and oral/practical units will be by registered
tutors in and through approved centres only, in
order to ensure standardisation of assessments
and facilities for candidates. These tutors will
also have to undergo an approval process, to ensure
the correct skill set.

How
do I become an ISTD Approved Dance Centre?
If
you wish to deliver the new teaching qualifications,
you will need to contact the Head of Education

will contain details of the approval process,
including details on the inspection visit, as
well as an application form. He will guide you
through the required process.

What
is AP(E)L?
This
is Accredited Prior (Experiential) Learning. It
means that candidates' prior achievements can
be taken into consideration when assessing their
entry point to the new qualifications. For example,
many candidates may have either the Associate
or Associate Diploma qualifications and this achievement
will be mapped against the new qualifications
to ascertain whether any further units need to
be completed in order to achieve the new qualifications.
This work is complicated and very detailed and
we are currently assessing different elements
of AP(E)L with the ISTD Dance Faculties.
