Dance
Teaching Essentials marks the fact that a common
understanding about good practice is emerging
across all kinds of dance teaching.
Compiled and written by a group encompassing expertise
in a wide range of dance teaching contexts, Dance
Teaching Essentials demonstrates the benefits
of working in partnership. The group included
specialists from Arts Educational School, Tring
Park, Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Council for
Dance Education and Training, Dance UK, the Foundation
for Community Dance, Learning and Access at The
Place, and the National Dance Teachers Association.
Contributions were made by the Association of
Dance of the African Diaspora, the Arts Councils
of England and Scotland, and a wide range of dance
artists, teachers and students from across the
UK.
Dance
Teaching Essentials brings together essential
information that all dance teachers need whatever
style of dance they teach. It includes sections
on how young people grow and learn, safe practice,
the legal framework that dance teachers work within,
planning and teaching strategies, qualifications
and professional development.
There
are lots of examples of dance teaching in practice
including in schools and studios, international
choreographic projects, and dance as an aid to
learning. The resources section includes summaries
of physical, psychological and emotional development,
physical disabilities and learning difficulties,
questions that parents might ask and risk assessment.
The
production of Dance Teaching Essentials has been
supported by the Regional Arts Lottery Programme
through London Arts. It is available from Dance
UK and partner organisations.
It
costs £7.50 plus p&p (£6.00 plus p&p
for Dance UK members), discounts available for
bulk purchase. Call 020 7228 4990 to order your
copy.
"I can thoroughly recommend Dance Teaching
Essentials to ISTD members. As we are all aware
dance teaching is very much in the spotlight at
the moment and this book is an invaluable source
of information for all dance teachers."
