Three
very special theatre programmes were delivered
to the library just before Christmas. Two 'All
Star' dancing matinees at the London Palladium
taking place in March and November 1935, both
organised by the Imperial Society of Teachers
of Dancing, and in aid of the News Chronicle 'Wireless
for Hospitals Fund'.
The
cast lists read rather like a who's who in the
theatre - Elsa Brunelleschi, Dimitri Vladimiroff,
Harold Turner, Mary Honer, Peggy van Praagh, Mary
Skeaping, Pearl Argyle, Jack Hulbert, Glynis Johns,
Pauline Claydon, Andrea Howard, Elisabeth Schooling,
Hugh Laing, Antony Tudor, Maude Lloyd, Joyce (Julia)
Farron, Frank Staff and Ninette de Valois. Also
names that became very closely linked with the
ISTD in later years - Marjorie Davies, Victor
Leopold, Joan Beste, Nancy Sherwood, Ruby Ginner,
Doreen Austin, Grace Cone, Olive Ripman, Cecil
Taylor, Henry Jacques, Pierre & Doris Lavelle,
Josephine Bradley, Victor Silvester, Phyllis Haylor
and Alex Moore.
One
can only hope that with such an array of talent,
the Wireless Fund reached its objective, 'to place
a pair of wireless headphones beside the bedside
in every voluntary hospital'.
The
third programme took place at the Royal Opera
House, Covent Garden. 'Radio Revels, Ball and
Cabaret', 8pm to 2am on 19th December of the same
year. First, '9.30', a children's cabaret, then
the Grace Cone production 'Midnight Revels' with
a hundred performers from the Cone School of Dancing,
also six famous dance bands will play during the
evening, MCs Bud Flanagan and Chesney Allen. 200
radio, screen and stage celebrities will attend.
One can just visualise the autograph books!
Donations
Grateful
thanks to Jill Price, Mrs Peniston-Bird and Betty
Bouston for the very useful additions to the library
shelves and also to Eve Pettinger who gave us
the three programmes.
