Marion
Lane
Grades & Medals Examiner for the Modern
Ballroom
& Latin American Faculties
Marion
Lane’s early influences sprang from
a background of Classical Ballet and the
Performing Arts, with her dance training
being thoroughly grounded in all aspects
of the theatre. |
Her
family traces its history back to Sara Lane, the
matriarch of one of England’s oldest theatrical
families and to the former Britannia Theatre in
London, where another connection Lupino Lane,
trod the boards.
Gradually,
Marion’s interests turned to Ballroom and
Latin American dancing and she decided to make
this her career. She began her professional training
with Peter Varley and it was he who continued
to inspire her, through his own high standards
of professionalism.
She
remains indebted to both Peter and Jill Bush for
their technical training and encouragement from
the beginning of her studies to the achievement
of her Fellowships in all Dance Sport Faculties.
Today Marion is co-principal of a thriving school
of dancing that she first established in South
Cambridgeshire in 1985. Now, with area centres
based in Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk
she is fully involved in all aspects and levels
of Dance Sport training; this extending from amateur
medallists of all ages to professionals in all
Dance Sport disciplines.
Having
chosen to train as an examiner for the ISTD, she
thanks those colleagues who have helped and encouraged
her, and in particular remembers Pat Goode for
her encouragement and good humour. Marion’s
appreciation also goes to her own family, for
the generous understanding and support they have
always shown.
As
a representative of the Latin American Faculty
Committee, she has been part of a working group
creating and presenting the new graded examinations
and new qualifications. Marion sees these, together
with the existing medals available, as offering
teachers further scope to train and develop amateur
dancers within their schools. She visualises the
opportunities for new teachers to create successful
careers within Dance Sport, and looks forward
to being involved in this both as a teacher and
an examiner.

was a recipient of the Phyllis Haylor Scholarship
and invited member of the Ballroom Teachers Committee.
He gained Fellowships in Ballroom and Latin American
in 2000 and was elected to the Latin American
