100 Years of Dance
I am sitting down to write this in a comparatively quiet library after the rather hectic days of the last few months.

When I began putting the library together in 1990 I had no idea what information would be required and researched in the years to come. In the first instance, it was designed to give teachers and students a starting point for their Anatomy and Physiology and History of Dance examinations. These were covered by a reading list and many visits to second hand bookshops all over London and as far away as Ross on Wye. Gradually all the Faculties were covered and as the members began to ask questions I put together different files of information, adding to them year by
year. A great deal of the material came from Mary Clarke’s wonderful Dancing Times coverage, when I could not find the answer in our own ISTD Journal.

Eventually, there were files on the aims of the Society, the Benevolent
Fund, Branches (now Faculties), Committee members, Chairmen, Presidents, Congress, the Emblem, Headquarters moves, Imperial Award, Library, Membership and Syllabus changes. Soon the filing cabinets were too full and I began to think that I must get rid of some of the paper mountain, as nobody seemed to be interested in it. Thank goodness I was too busy to implement the thought!

Over the years, Headquarters has moved many times and a great deal of material has been lost, but now, after a hundred years, the information that remains has been brought together in a visually pleasing book, 100 Years of Dance. It shows clearly our connection to the elegance of the past, the dedication of the many, and the challenge of the future, and will, I am sure, make all readers very proud.

Further information on 100 Years of Dance can be found on page 30.
