Library News - Spring 2006

Now that the Library Book Sale is available from Monday to Friday, situated just opposite the door to the shop, I thought I would call your attention to some of the most useful publications still waiting for a good home.

The Dancing Times
December 1931
This issue contains:
• a list of ballets and dancers for a Camargo Society production on November 29th, including ‘Rio Grande’ by Ashton • an interesting insight into the choreography of Ninette de Valois by P. J. S. Richardson • early technique of the Operatic Association by Felix Demery • an article on Saint-Léon by Derra de Moroda • a brief account of the story of Tango • Zelia Raye and Joan Davis in New York

The Dancing Times
February 1939
This issue contains:
• a discussion of the forthcoming production of the Sleeping Princess by guests attending the 32nd Dancers Circle Dinner • an article on Frederick Franklin by Lillian Moore • Musical Comedy by Freddie Carpenter together with wonderful period photographs of very well known names

Latin and American Dances
Pierre 1948
Long out of print and rarely found, a must for ballroom enthusiasts.

The Romantic Ballet in England
Ivor Guest 1954
The story of the golden age in the development of ballet and those who played a part in it.

My Life in Ballet
Leonide Massine 1968
The brilliant performer, discovered by Diaghilev, who became a prolific choreographer for the Ballet Russes, including the striking and, at the time, controversial symphonic ballets.

De Basil’s Ballets Russes
K. Sorley Walker 1982
Covering the work of the Ballets Russes after Diaghilev, with Colonel de Basil and many of the famous Diaghilev dancers.

British Ballet
Edited by Peter Noble c.1949
With a foreword by Margot Fonteyn and articles by A. V. Coton, Robert Helpmann, Cecil Beaton, Arnold Haskell, Joan Lawson, William Chappell and Cyril Beaumont. It gives a fascinating insight, from several different viewpoints, into the emerging dancers and companies of that time, together with sketches and photographs of famous names looking very young indeed! Full stage shots of dance patterns, décor and scenery are also useful.

Latest Acquisitions

Saturday Night Forever
A. Jones and J. Kantonen

Ivor Novello
P. Webb
