Latest Acquisitions
The Joy of Dancing, by Peggy Spencer MBE, 2004
A beautifully illustrated book, with clear descriptions
of basic steps, to encourage absolute beginners to master
Waltz, Mambo, Foxtrot, Samba, Tango, Cha Cha Cha, Quickstep,
Merengue, Rock/Jive and Rumba. Dance is for everyone
and this is a wonderful introduction.
The Joy of Dancing – The Next Steps, by

Adding three new steps to those learned in the first
book. Again, illustrated and described in detail.
Carlo
Blasis’ Treatise on Dance 1820 – 1830, by
Flavia Pappacena 2005
Famous for his virtuoso technique and impeccable style,
Carlo Blasis acquired great fame as maestro and director
of the Imperial Academy of Dancing at La Scala, and
also as the author of theoretical and historical works
on the dance.
Flavia Pappacina reconstructs the general, theoretical
and aesthetic lines that made up the conceptual backbone
of Blasis’ work. Both English and Italian texts,
with 58 pages of illustrations.
The
Paris Opéra Ballet, by Ivor Guest, 2006
The Cradle of Classical Dance. This book pays homage
to the long chain of generations of dancers, choreographers,
ballet masters, teachers and directors who, down the
centuries, have fashioned the history of the Ballet
de l’Opéra de Paris, and frequently the
very history of dance itself.
Ivor Guest’s work in this field has been recognised
in France by his appointment as a Chevalier of the Order
of Arts and Letters. Now presented for the first time
as an English edition and available at Dance Books Ltd.

Carter, 2004
From the ballets de cours of the Seventeenth Century
to Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, this book invites
the reader to revisit moments in the history of Western
theatre dance practice, and offers fresh perspectives
on important periods in dance history.
Human Development, by Diane E Papalia et al,
2003
A detailed study, covering Human Development, Begin-nings,
Early and Middle Childhood, Adolescence, Young, Middle
and Late Adulthood and the End of Life. A student CD-Rom
is included.

Velma
Pursehouse has again sent interesting and useful additions
to our archives, and we have received a wonderful gift
from Bryan Allen, a new book on the Tango. Many, many
thanks to both.
Tango, by Robert Harris Thomson, 2005
Sub titled ‘The Art History of Love’ - “giving
us the definitive account of Tango, passionately argued,
un-paralleled in its research, synthesis and depth of
understanding, and written with revelatory clarity.”
