Russell Maliphant World Premiere: Still Current

18 September 2013

UK Tour from Thursday 26th September to Saturday 26th October 2013

“Dancing bodies rarely look more beautiful than in the work of Russell Maliphant”
The Guardian

Still Current is a new evening of solos, duets and a trio by internationally acclaimed
choreographer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Russell Maliphant. Inspired by his
ensemble dancers; Thomasin Gülgeç, Dickson Mbi, Carys Staton, Maliphant once again
works in collaboration with his long-standing collaborator, lighting designer and Sadler’s
Wells Associate Artist Michael Hulls. Still Current also sees Russell Maliphant return
to the UK stage, in a role he shares with guest dancer Adam Kirkham from the
BalletBoyz.

The evening presents a diverse physical language that integrates qualities and
vocabulary from ballet, contemporary dance and martial arts that celebrates the technical
strength of Maliphant’s world class company.

The evening’s performance includes three new works including a duet created for Carys
Staton, drawing on her strength and versatility as a dancer. Staton is paired with Russell
Maliphant who shares the role with Adam Kirkham. Still Current also features a new
solo choreographed on Dickson Mbi who recently stunned audiences with his strength
and exceptional popping style in The Rodin Project, the dance film Erebus and the
Lucozade Revive commercial. Using contemporary dance, ballet and other styles
including popping, along with Maliphant’s choreographic language of flow, form and
dynamics this new solo showcases Mbi’s virtuosic language and performance character.
Still Current also features a new work for three male dancers drawing on, amongst other
things, the styles of Brazilian martial art of capoeira.

Along with these three new works Still Current features the critically acclaimed
Afterlight (Part One), winner of the Critics Circle National Dance Award for Best
Choreography. Performed by Thomasin Gülgeç, this solo showcases his fluid agility
and grace. He is joined by Carys Staton whose energetic elegance and delicate strength
are showcased in the new creations and in her performance of the modern-classic solo
Two.

Still Current includes an eclectic mix of music with compositions from Éric Satie and
long time collaborator Andy Cowton and a newly commissioned score by Armand
Amar, well known for his film scores. Costume designs are by Stevie Stewart, formerly
one half of the influential design label BodyMap, recently she has worked with Michael
Clark and Rambert as well as designing costumes for Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears,
and animation by Jan Urbanowski who created the opening credits for Danny Boyle’s
2013 film Trance.
