Breaking News: New QCF Accreditation Received from OFQUAL!

The ISTD is excited to announce that the Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy is now accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and will be running from 1st January 2012!

With support gained for this cross-sectoral initiative from three national organisations – OFQUAL, the Learning Skills and Information Services (LSIS), and the Institute for Learning (IfL) – we are proud to add that this qualification fully covers the requirements of the revised Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS), the qualification for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

Why Choose This Qualification?

- It is the first qualification to be run directly by the ISTD at ISTD2 Dance Studios through tailored mentoring and tutoring.

- It is the first qualification to cover the requirements of the new Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS), i.e. if you want to teach in colleges you must have DTLLS and QTLS status in the same way that you need a PGCE to work in schools.

- In the future, you will just need QTLS status/DTLLS to work either in FE or schools which ensures the longevity of this qualification.

Gaining QTLS Status

The Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy will allow experienced dance teachers and ex-professional dancers to use their existing knowledge and experience to develop their pedagogic skills within their chosen dance genre, refine transferable skills and enable progression within employment and between sectors. It will focus on an in-depth knowledge of advanced level professional dance teaching and will be delivered through a personally tailored training programme run directly by the ISTD.

This means that learners who have successfully completed the qualification will be deemed by the IfL as holding an appropriate initial teacher training qualification for the further education and skills sector, and will not have to obtain a Diploma in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) in order to teach in Further Education (FE) in England. Holders of the Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy wishing to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status may therefore proceed directly onto ‘Professional Formation’.

Upon completing the process of Professional Formation, the IfL will confer the professional practice licence ‘Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills’ (QTLS). QTLS status is the legislative right to practice in the Further Education and skills sector in England and Wales and, following Government proposals in response to the Wolf Report, in future, QTLS holders will have the right to become permanent teachers in schools in England. To follow developments on the proposals, please click here.

Visit the IfL website for more information on Professional Formation.

Accredited at Level 6 of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), the Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy is the equivalent in level of demand to the final year of a degree, with a total credit value of 213 and is available in the following genres: Cecchetti Classical Ballet, Imperial Classical Ballet, Tap Dance, Modern Theatre Dance, South Asian Dance, National Dance and Classical Greek Dance.

Accreditation details can now be found on OFQUAL’s Register of Regulated Qualifications and will soon be placed on the IfL’s Tariff of Qualifications (Initial Teacher Training).

Please contact the ISTD Education & Training Department at educationassistant@istd.org to discuss the course in further detail.
