Cecchetti International Classical Ballet Competition 2011

28 June 2011

Calling all teachers, students and dance lovers

Why not become part of this prestigious international gathering of major Ballet and Contemporary directors, teachers and future dance artists as a participant or as an audience member?

The Cecchetti International Classical Ballet (CICB) Competition 2011 is taking place at the Lowry, Manchester in July 2011. This high profile event, which attracts young dancers from around the world, is only staged every four years by the CICB and this is the first time it has been hosted in the UK. The competition has attracted a truly international entry of some 50 talented young dancers selected from across the UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and Japan.

The young dancers will be preparing for the competition under the experienced direction of Anita Young (Ballet) and Sharon Watson (Contemporary). Events open to the public take place from 28th – 30th July and the competition begins on Thursday 28th July with competitors participating in an adjudicated Contemporary class and performance of their Contemporary solos, followed on Friday 29th July by the adjudicated Ballet class and solos. A selection of finalists will be invited to compete in the finals on Saturday 30th July. A prestigious panel of adjudicators includes Brenda Last, Mark Baldwin, Francesca Filpi, Richard Glasstone, Matthew Hawkins, David Lloyd and Errol Pickford. The Gala evening on 30th July will also showcase guest artists from The Royal Ballet Company, English National Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre and Phoenix Dance Theatre.

The Lowry at Salford Quays in Manchester is a fantastic setting for the event with the waterside theatre and dance studios, the Gallery with a stunning collection of L. S. Lowry paintings and numerous hotels, restaurants and shops close by. The competition runs alongside Summer Courses for both Vocational Students and Teachers from 24th – 30th July and a programme of inspirational lectures and demonstrations for Cecchetti Day on 30th July. All these events are open to all and we extend a very warm welcome to both Cecchetti teachers and students, but also to friends and colleagues from other ISTD Faculties to be part of this exciting event.
